Special Assistance

If you need special assistance, in the airport and/or during the flight, just inform your travel agent, so that WHITE can coordinate all the necessary procedures. WHITE will ensure that your passage through the airport proceeds with all comfort and rapidity. You will have priority in check-in and departure.

The following are considered special assistance:

  • Passengers who need wheel chairs;
  • Unaccompanied minors;
  • Persons with sight deficiencies;
  • Deaf persons;
  • Other medical cases.

Passenger groups which require Special Assistance must be previously coordinated with WHITE and are subject to limitations.

Disabled Persons and Persons with reduced mobility
1- Definition
The definition of "disabled persons" and "persons with reduced mobility" for the purpose of air transportation is written in paragraph a) of Article 2 of Regulation (EC) no. 1107/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5th July 2006:

     a) "disabled person" or "person with reduced mobility" means any person whose mobility when using transport is reduced due to any        physical disability (sensory or locomotor, permanent or temporary), intellectual disability or impairment, or any other cause of disability, or age, and whose situation needs appropriate attention and the adaptation to his or her particular needs of the service made available to all passengers.

2 - General Principle - Prohibition to deny boarding
Air carries may not deny boarding based on disablement or reduced mobility. However, this right may be derogated by the Aeronautical Authorities due to reasons of security. On another hand and also due to reasons of security, there are restrictions on the allocation of seats on board of aircraft to disabled persons and to persons with reduced mobility.

3 - Assistance

  • In the airports it is responsibility of airport managing bodies to supply assistance, as it is written in the same (EC) Regulation identified above.
  • Airlines shall also provide assistance to disabled persons and to persons with reduced mobility, as it is written in the same (EC) Regulation and allowing the attendance by assistance dogs (see 3.1. below) and pieces of mobility equipment (ex:. wheelchairs – see 3.2 below).

WHITE AIRWAYS advises its passengers with big difficulties of mobility or needing support from others to travel together with another person for his own comfort. However, if the passenger decides to travel alone because he is sure not to need help or support, he will be notified that WHITE AIRWAYS does not grant special assistance during the flight, such as helping to feed the passenger and to move in the cabin. Passengers do not need to present a medical authorization to travel, unless in case they have health problems evidencing a clinical situation.

3.1. Assistance dogs
Blind persons shall inform their travel agencies about their intention to have one assistance dog on board. Special assistance will be provided at the airports.

Conditions to be accepted the assistance dogs on board:

  • According to the Portuguese law, are allowed to travel without muzzle.
  • Assistance dogs are not allowed to move along the cabin and they will not have reserved place.
  • Transportation of assistance dogs is free.


3.2. Wheelchairs
As it is written in the (EC) Regulation identified above, when one passenger intends to travel using his own wheelchair, he shall inform his travel agency using his own wheelchair, he shall inform his travel agency about his intention at least 48hours in advance; the travel agency will inform WHITE AIRWAYS. The passengers shall also inform about the dimensions and characteristics of his wheelchair.
As written in no.2 above and for reasons of security, there are restrictions to the seating on board, namely in case of seats close to the emergency exits.

WHITE AIRWAYS shall make its best efforts to seat the accompanying persons of disabled or passengers with reduced mobility close to them.

WHITE also supplies the following services:

  • Wheelchairs Ramp (WCHR)

This service is appropriate to passengers with reduced mobility with ability to use stairs and to move in the cabin.

  • Wheelchairs Stairs (WCHS)

Is applicable to passengers with reduced mobility without ability to use stairs.

  • Wheelchairs Cabin (WCHS)

Is applicable to passengers with reduced mobility who do not have ability to use stairs and to move in the cabin.

This service shall be requested to the travel agency on the moment the passenger makes his reservation and at least 48hours in advance.

- All these services are provided by WHITE AIRWAYS free of charge.
- At the EU airports these services are provided by the airport managing bodies.
